Vietnam Letter from Robert to Family Photo

Hi Alicia, Richie, Debbie, Denise, Doreen & Diane,

Wow!!! I got a letter. I didn’t think I was going to see another one. Seriously though, it was real good to hear from you.

Hey Rich, where’s the play pen?

Right now we’re at Loc Ninh, which is N.E. of Tay Ninh, near Quan Loi. We were up this way in Song Be last July. It's rubber plantations, mountains, bamboo. And red dirt. Everything I own is covered with red dirt. I hate it. There’s plenty of V.C. in this A.O. They follow us around during the day and we can’t fire them up cause it’s a “no free fire zone.” The other nite they were following us so we stopped and ate supper. When it got dark we moved about 300 meters and set up. Later that nite the gooks [derogatory word] mortared where we had stopped for supper. Last nite they were all around us probing our camp. We could here them, but couldn’t see them.

Right now the gooks [derogatory word] are moving south and building up around Saigon and in the Mekong Delta. They say there are 3 divisions of 1500 men ea in the Delta, but I’ll bet there’s more. Last week they found a cache 50 miles N. of Saigon. There were thousands upon thousands of weapons, rockets and mortar rounds. They say it’s the largest cache ever found in Vietnam. It was really unbelievable all they found.

Yes, I think we’re getting someplace here. After there big offensive in April or May, everything will simmer down. All class IV (canteens, poncho’s etc.) has been stopped from the states. The N.V.A. is drafting 12-15 year olds & girls. They’re about finished.

Well, I guess that’s it for now. You all be good, stay sober & keep smiling.

GETTING SHORT~~~109 DAYS E.T.S.

Love,

Bobby
