Impact, Advocacy, and Action
Through grassroots activism, media attention, legislative action, and evolving statewide programs, New York State keeps expanding opportunities for people with disabilities.
Established in February 2022 by Governor Hochul, the New York State Office of the Chief Disability Officer (OCDO) works to break down silos between state agencies that provide services to people with disabilities, improve diversity, equity, and inclusion, pushes for progress on statewide accessibility issues, provides a disability perspective on policy proposals, legislation, state agency operations, and diligently connects with communities and advocates on a wide spectrum of disability issues.
Established in 2024, the Deaf, DeafBlind, and Hard of Hearing Office works within the OCDO to improve access to resources and services for people in the Deaf, DeafBlind, and Hard of Hearing communities statewide.
While there is much more work to be done, New York State is committed to equity, inclusion, and celebrating the accomplishments of people with disabilities in our communities and workforce.
