My dad came to the US from Barbados in the early 1950s. He worked as a contract farm worker in Florida and Wisconsin, eventually breaking the contract and moving to NYC to become a union carpenter - the trade he learned in Barbados. One of his brothers also came to the US. Two sisters and a brother immigrated to England. My mother's family goes back generations in North Carolina. One of my great-great grandfathers was enslaved in NC and Louisiana. Thanks to the internet I have met several extended family members from my mother's family in person and online. I recently made a second trip to NC and was able to visit the grave site of my great grandmother, her siblings and other ancestors. The family still owns property in NC. My grandmother and her sisters made the pilgrimage from NC to NYC during the great Black migration of the 1920s. I love my family heritage!
