Birthplace of Hip-Hop

The Bronx

The 1520 Community Center at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue in the Bronx, is considered the birthplace of Hip-Hop music. On August 11, 1973, DJ Kool Herc displayed his unique "Merry-Go-Round" technique during a party at the center, kick-starting the movement that continues to inspire generations of artists.
