On October 28th, 1776, after daily skirmishes with the British, the Continental Army arrived at its base in White Plains. British and German Hessian soldiers, commanded by General William Howe, eventually broke through and overwhelmed the Continental Army’s lines. After a long and difficult campaign, General George Washington and his soldiers were forced to retreat from New York to New Jersey.
