Battle of Valcour Island
North Country
October 11, 1776
British victory
British troops in Canada were persistent in their attempts to gain control of Lake Champlain to access the Hudson River. Continental forces met them on Valcour Island but were no match for the British fleet. Although it would be classified as a defeat, the British were stalled from reaching the Hudson River, buying the Continental Army time to shore up their defenses.
