Battle of Fort St. George
Long Island
November 23, 1780
American victory
In November 1780, Continental Army forces led by Colonel Benjamin Tallmadge launched an attack on British-occupied Fort St. George, capturing the group of soldiers there and setting the fort aflame. This tactical victory for the Continental Army forced the British to allocate their limited resources to holding Long Island rather than dispersing them broadly.

Today, redoubt (military earthworks) markings are all that remains of Fort St. George. The site is commemorated through this New York State Historic Marker.
