Battle of Edgar’s Lane

In September 1778, Continental forces received word of a German Hessian infantry performing patrols along Albany Post Road in today’s Hastings-on-Hudson. Lieutenant Colonel Richard Butler deployed Continental soldiers led by Major Henry Lee for a surprise ambush. Many Hessian soldiers fled or were killed, marking a Continental victory within the “neutral ground” of Westchester.
