Jack Youngerman

Jack Youngerman’s Eastward is one of the sixteen works of art commissioned for the Empire State Plaza Art Collection. Displayed on the wall lobby of an Empire State Plaza agency building, Eastward provides a welcoming burst of color upon the lobby’s gray walls. The bright colors of Eastward’s flat surfaces and smooth edges of the work are typical of Youngerman’s work in the 1960s. While Youngerman insisted that his abstracted forms remain ambiguous, the blue and green of Eastward are reminiscent of a landscape with blue skies, green ground, and a mountain with its reflection bouncing off of the surface.
