Jack Tworkov

Jack Tworkov’s work can be divided in two stages: 1940s-1950s Abstract Expressionist gestural style and post-1960s carefully prepared geometric works. Wedding Flags is a transitory work that combines the two phases. The undulating green and red forms recall his earlier gestural work but Tworkov imposes structure by separating the panel into three sections and painting a limited number of colors onto a plain background.  His work presents a contrast between the smooth, flat surfaces and the form’s sense of movement.
